Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the age range for children at LEARN?
We can accept students at age 4 years and 9 months for our kindergarten/transitional kindergarten program. This is a state requirement. Our oldest students this year are in third grade. We expect to expand into upper elementary as these students grow.
How do admissions work?
If you are interested in your child attending Oakland LEARN, reach out on our contact page and book a tour. After the tour, we’ll schedule a trial day so we can see how your child gets along with our students and how they like the program. We do not require test scores from past schools, though they will aid us in placing a student with appropriate coursework.
Because we do personalized education, we are able in some cases to offer rolling admissions and accept mid-school-year transfers. We will never consider in admissions whether a family requested financial aid, though as a small program we may be unable to provide the requested financial aid.
Are LEARN’s students academically prepared for other schools?
So far, all of LEARN’s full-time students are performing at or above (often well-above) grade level. The LEARN students who took MAP Growth placement exams in summer 2025 (all full-time enrolled students) all scored 97th percentile or higher for their grades. Many LEARN students are completing coursework designed for students four or five years older than they are. We’re confident our students are more than prepared for other schools.
Can parents be involved?
LEARN parents are extremely involved - that’s how we provide so much to kids with limited resources. Parents teach classes in cooking, geography, science, history, holidays around the world, civics, storytelling, art, and music. We encourage (but do not require) parents to offer a class in something you love, and will help you figure out how it can work as a lesson for this age group.
Is this a secular program?
Yes. Oakland LEARN is a secular program. We have families from many different backgrounds who practice different faiths and traditions, and we welcome all of them.
Can I homeschool part-time and have my child attend LEARN part-time?
We have part-time students, though we ask that students attend on consistent days and for consistent hours so that teachers can do curriculum planning and arrange staffing with the students’ needs in mind.
What hours does LEARN offer?
At this time LEARN is open 9-4. We may expand our hours as our program grows.
